Cricket Ireland Refutes Bulbuls Claims as Controversy Escalates

The controversy surrounding Bangladesh's absence from the 2026 T20 World Cup has taken a new turn. While the then-BCB’s (Bangladesh Cricket Board) rigid stance against playing in India due to security concerns continues to spark debate, a significant claim by former board president Aminul Islam Bulbul has been directly dismissed as "incorrect" by Cricket Ireland.

What was Bulbul’s Claim?

In a recent interview with the daily Prothom Alo, Aminul Islam Bulbul claimed that discussions had taken place behind the scenes to include Sri Lanka as an alternative venue to ensure Bangladesh's participation. According to Bulbul, the Cricket Ireland board was willing to swap groups for Bangladesh and had even provided written support to the BCB.

In the interview with Prothom Alo's Mahmudul Hasan, he stated:

"When we wrote to the ICC, the Cricket Ireland board sent an email saying they were ready to support us. They had no issue with changing groups. They didn't just give their word; they gave it in writing."

Cricket Ireland’s Counter-Stance

To verify this sensational claim, Cricket97 contacted the Ireland Cricket Board. However, the response from the Irish side completely contradicts Bulbul’s statement.

On behalf of Cricket Ireland Chairman Brian MacNeice, Media Manager Craig Easdown clarified to Cricket97:

"Unfortunately, this statement is not true. We were never in favor of changing groups or relocating teams, nor did we provide any such support."

Context and Reality

According to cricket analysts, proposing or implementing a group change in a major ICC tournament is an extremely complex process. Historically, there is no precedent for altering the World Cup schedule or groups once finalized, as it involves massive commercial interests including broadcasting rights, logistics, and sponsorships. Therefore, the idea of a board like Ireland unilaterally agreeing to a group change was viewed with skepticism from the start.

It is worth noting that this is the first time in the history of the T20 World Cup that Bangladesh is not participating. Due to the stance of the interim government and internal lack of coordination within the BCB, the Tigers were ultimately sidelined from the tournament. While new information has emerged following the BCB elections on February 12, this direct rejection by Cricket Ireland has plunged Bulbul and the then-board’s credibility into a deeper image crisis.
