Greaves Double Ton, Roachs Grit Help West Indies Escape with a Draw
On the fifth and final day of the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch, Justin Greaves’ unbeaten 202 ensured a valuable draw for West Indies. Contributions from Shai Hope, who scored 140, and Kemar Roach, unbeaten on 58, also helped the visitors stay in the fight while chasing a massive target.
Set an improbable 531 for victory, West Indies were pushed to the brink of defeat after finishing the fourth day at 72 for 4. However, Shai Hope displayed remarkable resilience and brought up a fine century to steady the innings.
But early on the final day, Hope’s dismissal once again put the visitors under pressure. Tevin Imlach soon followed, leaving West Indies in deep trouble at 277 for 6. From there, Greaves and Roach showed exceptional composure and patience in their seventh-wicket stand. Their determined partnership ensured the team faced no further setbacks.
Roach, who had taken five wickets earlier in the Test, proved to be a major source of relief with the bat as well. He held firm and dispatched loose deliveries whenever they came. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s attack—already weakened by injuries to two frontline pacers, particularly Matt Henry—struggled to break the Windies’ resistance.
In the end, West Indies survived through the final session to secure a hard-earned draw. Justin Greaves was named Player of the Match.
