The Background Behind Bangladesh Missing the T20 World Cup
Missing the biggest stage in cricket is painful for any player, and that feeling was no different for Bangladesh’s cricketers and fans. However, the political and security-related circumstances behind Bangladesh’s absence from the 2026 T20 World Cup are gradually coming to light.
To explain the reasons for keeping Bangladesh out of the World Cup, then Sports Advisor Asif Nazrultold BBC Bangla,
“Why did I make the decision? At first, it was said on Facebook that the government did not make the decision. Then the initial report, which BBC Bangla translated and published, showed that the ICC’s independent assessment had mentioned three things that left us stunned. It said the Bangladesh team’s risks could increase for three reasons.”
Explaining the risks in detail, Asif Nazrul said:
“One, if Mustafiz plays; two, if Bangladeshi spectators move around here and there; three, because there is an election… after seeing these three things, it felt like, are they mocking us? All three things would happen. Mustafiz would definitely play, Bangladeshi spectators would definitely move around, and there would be an election. When we strongly protested, another report tried to dismiss it lightly. Then it felt like they were not serious about our security.”
On the international and local context, Asif Nazrul further revealed:
“It was not the Indian board or the Kolkata team, but the government—there was never a single attempt from their side to contact us saying, ‘Don’t worry, we are watching.’ Of course, we were concerned about security. The election was coming up. If a terrible incident had occurred there, how would the consequences have affected Bangladesh?”
In Bangladesh’s cricketing history, this decision is regarded as a sensitive chapter, where a delicate balance had to be maintained between the dream of playing and the nation’s security.
