A Legacy Hidden Behind Decay, Sylhet District Stadium Awaits Renovation

Once the heartbeat of Sylhet’s sporting arena and a symbol of pride and passion, Sylhet District Stadium now appears burdened by neglect and deterioration. Yet, this very মাঠ was once considered the cradle of cricket in Sylhet, where many of Bangladesh’s brightest cricketing talents were nurtured.

Cricketers like Rajin Saleh, Tapash Baisya, and Alok Kapali grew up on this ground and went on to represent Bangladesh with pride on the international stage. It is also where Enamul Haque Jr. built the foundation of his cricketing career—his spin brilliance later played a key role in Bangladesh securing their first-ever Test victory against Zimbabwe.

Not just local stars, the ground has also witnessed the presence of international cricket icons. Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga and India’s Raman Lamba have played on this very pitch. Among local legends, regular appearances by Aminul Islam Bulbul, Akram Khan, and Minhajul Abedin Nannu added to the prestige of the stadium.

Beyond cricket, the venue is also recognized as an international-standard football ground. From domestic leagues to international fixtures, and even sports like hockey and badminton, the stadium has long been a central hub for multiple disciplines.

However, this custodian of heritage now suffers from poor management and neglect. During a recent inspection, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque expressed his frustration, stating, “When the authoritarian government was in power, they carried out large-scale corruption in the name of development. As a result, we are now witnessing this dilapidated condition of Sylhet District Stadium, which is deeply unfortunate.”

He has instructed for the stadium to be renovated promptly and emphasized making it suitable for sporting activities again. Notably, the venue is scheduled to host the launch of the nationwide talent hunt program ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ on April 30, which aims to open new avenues in the country’s sports sector.

Sylhet District Stadium is not just a sports venue—it is a symbol of history, emotion, and potential. Therefore, its renovation would not only be an infrastructural upgrade but also a crucial step toward restoring Sylhet’s rich sporting heritage.
