Mental preparation is the biggest challenge in Tests simmons
Bangladesh are busy preparing for their upcoming Test series against Pakistan, the first red-ball assignment of the year. Ahead of the series, head coach Phil Simmons addressed the media on Wednesday, speaking about the team’s current state and plans, while emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present rather than the past.
Although Bangladesh have fond memories of winning a series in Pakistan in 2024, the coach is not placing much weight on that achievement this time. According to him, every series presents a new challenge, and previous results carry little relevance. On this, Phil Simmons said,
“Beating Pakistan and whitewashing them is in the past. That is gone. We want to create new history in this series.”
Simmons also highlighted the progress and role of young pacer Nahid Rana, praising his ability to read the game and understand his responsibilities quickly. Speaking about him, he said,
“The best thing about Nahid Rana is his ability to understand. He knows where he is and what his job is.”
The Bangladesh coach also offered special praise for experienced batter Mushfiqur Rahim, noting his consistency in preparation and mindset regardless of milestones such as his 100th Test. On Mushfiqur, he said,
“I have known Mushfiq for a short time, but in this period I have understood that for him it could be the 1st Test, the 50th, or the 100th—everything is the same. The way he prepares for a Test match, he will continue doing that. He will treat his 101st match just like all the previous ones.”
On the transition from white-ball to red-ball cricket, Simmons described it mainly as a mental adjustment. However, he believes the process will not be difficult for the current squad, as several players have been working specifically on red-ball cricket in recent months. He said,
“Test cricket is mainly a mental adjustment. At the same time, there are players in the team who were not part of white-ball cricket and have been working on red-ball cricket for the last few months. So I think this transition will be easier than you might expect.”
