Three BCB Directors Resign in a Day, Six Depart Within Six Months
The resignation of three Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors within hours of each other following a lengthy board meeting on Saturday night has once again brought internal instability to the forefront. After the meeting, Faiazur Rahman first informed of his resignation, and shortly afterward Shanian Taneem and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury followed suit. As a result, a total of six directors have stepped down within just six months of the latest BCB elections.
Earlier this year in January, Ishtiaque Sadeque resigned citing personal reasons. Last month, Amzad Hossain submitted his resignation shortly after being removed as chairman of the media committee. Meanwhile, government-nominated director Yasir Mohammed Faysal stepped down on Thursday. The resignation of three directors together the following day has further complicated the situation.
What exactly transpired during Saturday’s meeting remains unclear. BCB president Aminul Islam chaired the meeting, while vice-president Faruque Ahmed, who is unwell, joined virtually. Following the meeting, newly appointed media committee chairman Mohammad Mokhsedul Kamal said that the issue of resignations was not discussed in the board meeting and that those who stepped down cited personal reasons.
It is worth noting that Faiazur Rahman also served as vice-chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) and had recently criticised the BCB for its role in organizing domestic leagues.
Meanwhile, multiple resignations within such a short period are being viewed as unusual, especially since elected directors typically serve full terms. At the same time, a government investigation into the BCB elections held last October is ongoing, with a report expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Sports soon. Additionally, the State Minister for Sports has announced plans for a separate probe into Bangladesh’s absence from the recent T20 World Cup, as well as allegations of political favouritism within the BCB.
