England Likely to Host Next Three WTC Finals: Telegraph

The International Cricket Council (ICC) appears set to once again entrust England with hosting duties for the World Test Championship (WTC) Finals. According to a report published by The Telegraph, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is likely to secure hosting rights for the next three finals — in 2027, 2029, and 2031.

While three different teams have won the last three WTC titles, one constant has been the venue — all finals have taken place in England. Southampton, The Oval, and most recently Lord’s have each played host to the pinnacle event of Test cricket.

Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had expressed interest in staging the final, it seems England remains the ICC’s preferred choice. A combination of practical and diplomatic considerations influenced the decision.

England's favorable June weather, its reputation as a neutral venue, logistical ease, and consistently strong fan turnout work in its favor. In contrast, hosting a final in India presents several challenges — particularly the strained political relationship with Pakistan, which raises visa concerns, and the possibility of lower attendance if India doesn’t make the final.

At Lord’s this year, even without India in the final, the MCC’s ticket price strategy helped attract large crowds — around 75,000 spectators over the first three days — further validating England as a prime host.

An official announcement is expected at next month’s ICC Annual Meeting in Singapore, but the ECB has already begun preliminary preparations to host the next WTC finals.

The 2023–25 WTC cycle concluded with South Africa lifting the trophy at Lord’s, and the 2025–27 cycle is set to begin on June 17, with the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Test in Galle.
