Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has expressed deep regret over the country’s absence from one of cricket’s biggest stages. He described Bangladesh’s decision not to participate in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup as a “big mistake” and placed the responsibility squarely on the government.

Speaking at the jersey unveiling event of “EU T20 Belgium” in Mumbai, India, Shakib highlighted the impact of Bangladesh missing the World Cup. He emphasized how disappointing such a decision is for a cricket-loving nation. In this context, Shakib said,

“I think it is a big loss for Bangladesh cricket. As a country, we love to see our players play World Cup matches. We are a cricket-loving nation. For a country like Bangladesh, not participating in the World Cup is truly a big miss.”

The all-rounder also spoke candidly about the role of the government behind the decision not to take part in the tournament. According to him, it has not only harmed the sport but also deprived fans of the joy of the World Cup.

Shakib said,

“This decision has deprived Bangladesh’s cricket-loving fans of enjoying the World Cup.”

At the same event, Shakib also addressed his international career. Although he played his last Test against India in October 2024, he had hoped to play a farewell match on home soil before closing that chapter. However, that plan did not materialize. Despite this, Shakib remains optimistic about the future, believing that the situation will improve with time.

He said,

“Let’s see what happens! Whether today or tomorrow, the situation will start to improve. Everything changes with time. So, I am hopeful.”
