England Reach Super 8 After Beating Italy
England once again escaped a major scare. They secured a place in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup by defeating tournament debutants Italy by 24 runs.
England posted 202/7 in 20 overs, but early on, it looked like the match could slip away from them. For Italy, Ben Manenti scored 60 off 28 balls, while Grant Stewart added 45 off 25 balls. Their aggressive batting put England under significant pressure.
In the end, when Italy still had a chance to win, Sam Curran dismissed Stewart. In the following over, Jamie Overton took two wickets to wrap up the innings, leaving Italy all out for 178.
England’s batting had its challenges as well. The team was 105/5 before Will Jacks came in and scored an unbeaten 53 off 21 balls, strengthening the total. This was his first T20 international fifty and the fastest half-century by an England player in a T20 World Cup.
This victory takes England into the Super 8, while Italy’s tournament comes to an end. Italy will play their final match on Thursday in Mumbai against the West Indies.
